today i started filming for the short doc i’m working on for my thesis. the focus of it will be on car companies and climate change. everyone and their baby is chanting the tune of “going green” eagerly on their bandwagon. but who is all talk and who is all torque? …ahem….finding the solution-or the problem rather-will be something of a challenge.

what i found today was a bunch of peops (both companies and consumers) pointing fingers in different directions. i found that every company’s ‘solutions’ to reducing their carbon footprint were being contradicted by the next’s. one person blamed car companies for not producing more options or lower prices for their low emission vehicles. another said that the canadian government is not taking a big enough lead and need to increase their incentives and/or their regulation (to which a canadian representative said “that’s called communism”). yet another person representing a ‘big wheel’ car company said the problem will disappear once consumers start buying their efficient vehicles.

this is an issue that everyone has an opinion about but at the same time is quite ignorant. so am i. but that’s what i hope to change. no one wants to come across like they don’t care about the environment, especially these days (except one older gent who said “i don’t give a fuck, I drive a truck!”) and yet why aren’t we practicing what we preach?

i’m looking forward to learning a lot in the next couple months. this is a subject that is in the forefront of popular culture and politics and it should be, its a big deal. i don’t know nearly enough but when i’m done, i will. one thing i do know based on today’s events is that some companies want to talk about their role on climate change and others have clearly been given clear instructions to not talk about this subject under any circumstances. i cannot wait to take on the big guys of the automobile industry on their role in corporate citizenship. i’ve already learnt so much from today and cannot wait to share it with you.
